LONAN, with LAXEY.

LONAN, in the sheading of Garff,, is an extensive and very mountainous parish, comprising within its limits the pleasant and improving village of Laxey. Its length from north to south is seven miles, and breadth from east to,west is four miles. The parish is bounded on the east by the sea, on the south by Onchan, on the west by Lezayre, and on the north by Maughold. The surface is varied by mountain and valley; the former barren, the latter fertile. A considerable portion of the inhabitants are employed in the lead mines at Laxey, the rest are chiefly engaged in agriculture. The parish church occupies a commanding eminence some little distance from the high road betwixt Douglas and Laxey. It is dedicated to St. Lomanns, a nephew of St. Patrick, and from whom the parish takes its name. The living is a vicarage in the gift of the Crown, and held by the Rev. F. J. Moore. There is a handsome stone-built chapel of ease at Laxey, erected in 1856, and under the charge of the Rev. T. C. Chapman. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists each have a chapel here and one at Laxey. Laxey is an improving village on the main road from Douglas to Ramsey, from which places it is equidistant. It is situated in a lovely and romantic glen, and girt about by an amphitheatre of hills, presenting a most charming appearance on the approach from Douglas. The chief attraction here is the great water wheel, named the Lady Isabella, said to be the largest ever made. It is used for keeping the mines clear of water.
