[From Slater's Directory,1852]

RAMSEY, WITH THE PARISH OF KIRK MAUGHOLD.

RAMSEY is a rapidly improving market town and sea-port, principally in the parish of Maughold, 25 miles N. E. from Castletown, 16 N. fron: Douglas, the like distance N. E. from Peel, and 8 N. from Laxey ; situated on the north-eastern coast of the island. The houses are well built, and the streets mostly spacious, clean, and in good repair, but irregularly arranged around the court-house. The market square was much enlarged in 1830, and is now one of the most complete and convenient in the island, and is well supplied with fish. The bay, in front of the town, is capacious, and affords perfect shelter from all storms not coming from the east; the anchorge is good, and the quay is furnished with a lighthouse, which was erected at the extreme end of the pier in 1845 and a light ship has lately been moored about 7 miles E-s.&. from the pier The harbour was. materially improved in 1836; by the erection of an additional pier, nearly parallel with the old one. From: this port the principal part of the cattle, horses, grain, eggs, and other produce not required for the home market, is shipped. The imports consist of coal, timber, drapery, ironmongery, &c. Excellent cod and haddock are found in the bay. The river Sulby flows into the Harbour of Ramsey; it is Se Te Ce the island, and contains excellent trout, which afford considerable sport to the disciples of Walton.

The road from hence to the Point of Ayre is carried over the river, near the town, by a bridge of three small arches. In 1760, the fleet taken by Commodore Elliott from the French Admiral Thurot, off the western coast of the Isle of Man, was brought into Ramsey bay. The court-house, which was erected in 1800, and repaired and improved in 1837, stands near the centre of the town ; in it the high bailiff (whose jurisdiction extends over the parishes of Andreas, Bride, Jurby, Lezayre, and Maughold,) holds a court every Saturday for the recovery of debts under forty shillings; the northern deemster, and also the vicar-general, hold court once a fortnight ; and a court of common law sits in the months of February, May, July and October. The town is much resorted to in summer, and every acommodation, whether public or private, is afforded to visiters, there being three excellent Hotels, and many respectable lodging houses. The sands are remarkably fine, and of great extent ; and few places enjoy the advantage of a more inviting beach for sea-bathing. Douglas, Liverpool, and Glasgow are in frequent communication with Ramsey by means of steam packets, which are the property of two companies; and there are coaches daily to Douglas, and three times : a week to Peel.

The places of worship are Saint Paul's church, in the Market-square (of which the Rev. William Kermode is incumbent), a Chapel of Ease on the Ballure road, and chapels for Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists, and United Seceders. The grammar school is about to be remodelled, having lately come under a new trust. A National school, for children of both sexes, is well conducted ; and in the Sandy road is an excellent classic and commercial academy. A branch of the Bank of Mona and City. of Glasgow Bank is established here, and there is a savings: bank. The prospect round Ramsey is picturesque, and agreeably diversified: the lofty mountains of Snafield and Barrule rear their heads to the south-west; to the west stretches a fine and fertile undulating district, interspersed with neat mansions and sheltering plantations; while, to the east, the agitated and frequently turbulent blue wave contrasts with the calm scenery on the island. Near the town, on the read to Douglas, a tower has been erected by public subscription, in commemoration of the landing of H.R.H Prince Albert, on the 20th September, 1847, on the return of Her Majesty from Scotland: it is between fifty and sixty feet in height, and is nanmed ee the 'Albert tower' The weekly market, held on Saturday, is well attended; as are two cattle fairs, held on the 25th of March and the 8th of November.

Kirk Maughold, a mountainous parish, occupies a portion of the eastern coast, in the Sheading of Garff, and northern division of the island. It extends from north to south abont four miles and a half, and three from east to West ; having the town of Ranmsey on its most northern point, and the bold promontory of Maughold Head on its eastern. The parish church of Saint Maughold is situated near the headland jase ~ named, about three miles from Ramsey, and is a small — plain building. A short distance west of this edifice are the iron mines, at present leased by William Dixon, Esq., of the Govan Iron Works, Lanarkshire, the operation of which, under the management of Mr. Andrew Kerr, have proved encouraging to the lessee; about sixty persons are employed in the works, which produce upwards of four hundred tons of ore monthly. Several other veins of this useful ore have been found to exist in this parish, these also being worked by the same party.

POST OFFICE, Parliament-street, RAMSEY, Edward Corbett, Post Master. - Letters from all parts of the island arrive (from DOUGLAS) every morning (Sunday excepted) at half-past seven, and are despatched thereto at a quarter before four in the afternoon.— Letters from England, &c. arrive from are are despatched to Douglas daily (Sunday excepted) in summer, and every Wednesday and Saturday in winter, the time of despatch being regulated by the departure of the steamer from Douglas.
