[From Slater's Directory,1852]
MAROWN parish lies in the southern division of the island, in the Sheading of Glanfaba ; it is the only parish in the Isle of Man not washed by the sea, and is upwards of five miles in length by an average breadth of three. The eastern central and western parts of this district are in excellent candition, being well cultivated; but the northern and southern portions are hilly, and comparatively unproductive. There are two vestiges of antiquity to be observed in this parish — the ruins of Saint Trinian's chapel, a little beyond Crosby and a Druidical temple, on the north side of Mount Murray. There is a mining company at Ellerslie, called the Mona Mining Company. — The Foxdale mines, rought by the Isle of Man Mining Company. are partly in this parish ; they produce about one hundred and fifty tons of lead ore per month, and give employment to upwards of four hundred hands; the managing proprietor is Mr. William Beckwith. York Cottage, the halfway house between Douglas and Peel, occupied by Mr. Burrows, affords good accommodation to visiters. There is plenty of sport for the angler; and snipe, woodcock, &c is plentiful in the neighbourhood. The shooting season commences here on the 12th of September... A new parish church has been erected on the estate of Ballawilleykilley, the ground for the site was given by Mr. P. Kelley, the proprietor. The living of Marown is a vicarage in the gift of the Crown, and incumbency of the Rev. William Duggan. An annual fair is held at Greba, in this district, on the 2nd of February.
CROSBY is a small but respectable village, on the road between Douglas and Peel; five miles west of the former, and about the same distance east of the latter. The Wesleyans have a neat chapel in this village.
