The fee for an ordinary marriage licence is 7s. 6d. ; and for a special licence, including fee to the Bishop’s Secretary, £6 6s.; which licence of the Bishop may, as he see fit, grant for solemnization of marriage according to the rites of the Church of England, in any chapel duly licensed for the celebration of divine worship. The following is the 7th clause of the Isle of Man Marriage Act, 1819 : — -" And be enacted that no licence of marriage shall, from and after the promulgation of this Act, be granted by the Bishop, Vicar-General, or Surrogate, or person having authority to grant such licence, to solemnize any marriage in any other church or chapel than in the parish church, and chapel duly licensed by the Bishop for that purpose. of or belonging to the parish within which the usual place of abode of one of the persons to be married shall have been for the space of thirty days immediately before the granting of such licence.

Licensing Courts.

Yearly sessions of these Courts are held for each High-Bailiff’s district in the several towns between the 12th March and the 12th April, for the purpose of granting certificates to qualify persons to obtain licences for the sale of intoxicating liquors, for the year commencing on the 12th May following. Special sessions are held as occasion may require. One month’s previous notice of the yearly session, and one week’s notice of a special session of the Court is given by the High-Bailiff.

Each Court is composed of the following persons : — The High-Bailiff, President. The Justices of the Peace resident in the district. The Rectors, Vicars, and Captains of the Parishes in the district. Of whom five form a quorum. The Appeal from this Court is to the Governor.
