Parishes of Conchan and Marown.
Public NoticeWHEREAS various inaccuracies, irregularities, and omissions have taken place in the parishes of Conchan and Marown, in keeping the registers required to be kept under the provisions of the Act of Tynwald promulgated in the year 1849, intituled "An Act for the better regulating Parish and other Registers of Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials in the Isle of Man," and that many inaccuracies and omissions exist in the copies and in the documents which purport to be copies of the said Registers, required by the said Act to be delivered yearly at the Chapter Court, to be deposited in the Episcopal Registry of this Isle and Diocese, and that the Names of Persons baptized in the said parish of Marown have been omitted from the Registers of Baptisms of such parish, and that no Register of Baptisms, in the form required by the said Act, was for several years after the promulgation of the said Act kept in the said parish of Conchan; and whereas, by reason of such irregularities, inaccuracies, and omissions aforesaid, great public inconvenience may be caused, and it may be necessary to provide by legislation so far as it may be practicable a remedy for such inconvenience; and whereas his Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor has, by special commission, dated the 10th instant, directed that I should, with all convenient speed, inquire into and report unto him the state and condition of the several Registers of the said parishes of Conchan and Marown from the 1st day of January, 1860, to the 1st day of January, 1870, and to ascertain, so far as it may be practicable, all such inaccuracies, irregularities, and omissions in the said Registers and Copies, or in the documents which purport to be copies of the said Registers so deposited in the Episcopal Registry during the said period;—
I do, therefore, Give Notice, That in order to facilitate such inquiry, the several Books and Documents purporting to be the Registers of the said parishes during the said period, and the Returns so made at the Chapter Courts and deposited in the Episcopal Registry, have been placed in my charge to be inspected as to the state and condition thereof, and in order that all Persons interested therein may have free access thereto, I shall attend at the PAROCHIAL SCHOOLHOUSE in the Parish of Conchan, on TUESDAY next, the 25th inst., and on TUESDAY the 1st day of February next, between the hours of Two o'clock and Four o'clock in the Afternoon, and at the INFANT SCHOOL-HOUSE at Ballaquinney Mill, in the Parish of Marown, on WEDNESDAY next, the 26th inst., and on WEDNESDAY, the 2nd day of February next, between the same hours, and at the COURT-HOUSE, in the Town of Douglas, on THURSDAY, the 27th; FRIDAY, the 28th; SATURDAY, the 29th, from 11 o'clock in the Forenoon, until 1 o'clock in the Afternoon of each day— in order that all Persons having any interest in the Persons whose Names ought to have been Entered on any of the said Registers, or in those that may have been irregularly entered thereon, may then and there have free access to all such Registers and Documents, and be in a position to give any evidence as to any omissions, inaccuracy, or irregularity, or in any wise touching and concerning the premises.
Given at Douglas the 20th day of Jan., 1870. SAMUEL HARRIS, Commissioner.
