PRINCIPAL EVENTS OF 1913.

JANUARY

3rd.-Fourteen " conscientious objectors " were, at the Douglas High-Bailiff's Court, fined for not having their children vaccinated.

3rd to 20th.-Mission services conducted in the Episcopal Churches of Douglas by the Bishop (Dr Denton Thompson).

8th.-The Douglas Town Council, in connection with. the lighting of Villa Marina, decided upon independent electrical installation. Noble's Trustees grave £3,500 for the furnishing of the new hall.

11th to 13th.- Stormy week-end. Steamer traffic disorganised, the Snaefell, from Liverpool, having to land at Peel on the 11th.

13th.-Public meeting in Douglas under the auspices of the Oddfellows. Addresses upon the National Insurance Act delivered by Director Alfred H. Warren, J.P., and Director Rev F. C. Davies, M.A., who also spoke at Ramsey, Peel, Castletown, and Laxey on subsequent dates.

13th.-Report of the Insular Commission on Old Age Pensions for the Isle of Man issued. Estimated cost, over £20,000 a year.

14th.-Vaccination Amendment Bill, introducing a conscience clause; passed second reading in the House of Keys. Third reading of the Workmen's Compensation Bill met with strenuous opposition from Mr Crennell.

15th.-Annual re-union of Manx Liberal Association. Radical programme outlined.

18th.-At annual meeting of Isle of Man Farmers' Club, there was grumbling against the town members of harassing farmers by introduction of legislation for registering dairies and dealing with milk supply.

21st.-Keys passed third reading of Vaccination Amendment Bill. Workmen's Compensation lost by 12 votes to 10.

22nd.-At the Chancery Court, the Rev J. W. A. McKenzie, Vicar of Whitwick, Leicester, claimed £640 against the estate of the late Miss L. E. Murray, of Ramsey. Forgery on the part of the claimant was alleged. The vicar's claim was dismissed.

23rd.-Committee: of Tynwald appointed to consider reclamation of waste lands, etc., made interim report, better drainage being recommended, and Government loans for land improvement suggested.

23rd.-Induction of the Rev W. A. Rushworth, M.A., Vicar of Braddan.

27th.-Issue of Tynwald Committee's report on Manx roads and fisheries; repair of old roads recommended, and loans for fisheries suggested.

28th.-Second reading in the House of Keys of Mr W. M. Kerruish's bill for the relief of poor debtors, legalising payment of executions by instalments and curtailing the arrest of wages.

29th.-The Rev J. W. A. McKenzie was charged at Douglas with forgery of a promissory note for £300. Evidence given by handwriting expert. Defendant committed for trial.

30th.-Statutory meeting of the Douglas Licensing Board. Election of Mr H. J. Clague (Laxey), Alderman R. Corlett (Mayor), Mr R. H. Collister, H.K., Dr Marshall; H.K., Mr W. M. Kerruish, H.K., and Mr W. Goldsmith, H.K., to form the District Licensing Bench.

30th. Harry Thorpe charged at Peel with sending a telegram and postcard to Deemster Callow, threatening to shoot him, was committed for trial.

FEBRUARY

3rd.-Deputation from Chamber of Commerce to. the Lieut.-Governor on Industrial Development. His Excellency undertook to place the) matter before Tynwald..

4th.-In the Keys, Col. Moore's bill for Nationalisation of the Drink Traffic (thereby providing funds for Old Age Pensions) lost on first reading, the Colonel only rallying three supporters.

4th.-In Tynwald, the holding of motor races was sanctioned, with regulations which included the prohibition of all motor traffic on the highways on the Sunday immediately preceding the race, etc.

4th.-The Douglas School Board levied their rate-1s 1½,d in the £ -an increase of 2d.

6th.-Tynwald Committee inquired into the proposed electric lighting of Villa Marina and furnishing of the new Kursaal. 11th.-Induction of Rev H. F. Shenton, Vicar of St. Barnabas', Douglas.

11th.-Death of Mr John Kewley, Ballaragh, Lonan.

13th.-At annual meeting of the Anti-Compulsory Vaccination Society, evidence was proffered for the Manx enquiry Committee.

18th.-In the House of Keys, Mr Crennell's Adult Suffrage, Bill was rejected on second reading. In the Racecourses Licensing Bill, drastic amendments, were carried, prohibiting betting on racecourses.

25th.-Isle of Man Steam Packet Company annual meeting. Dividend, 6¼%

27th.-Rev Wilson Stuart's action in the High Court against the proprietors- of the " Isle of Man Times " for libel. Settlement arrived at, £200 damage being awarded plaintiff ; defendants to pay costs and to publish an ample apology.

MARCH-

1st.-Legislative Council considered question of vaccination. Dr Hadwen gave evidence.

1st.-Intelligence received of disaster to Dr Mawson's exploration party in Antartic regions. Dr Mawson was of Manx origin.

3rd.-At the Isle of Man Railway Company's annual meeting, an extension of the Foxdale line over Barrule Mountain was suggested.

6th.-The Bishop, presiding over a massed Temperance meeting in Douglas, denounced a section of the Press for its poisonous criticism. Resolution carried for the abolition of free concerts in public-houses.

8th.-Capt. Bridson appointed master of the new Manx geared turbine steamer King Orry..

10th.--Harry Thorpe, for having threatened to shoot Deemster Callow, sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour.

11th.-Launch of the King Orry at Birkenhead. Naming ceremony performed by Mrs W. A. Waid.

11th.-Death of Mr W. D. Cowin, of Douglas; he took great interest in Noble's Hospital and many social and religious institutions; a keen sportsman, an excellent shot, and an angler.

11th.-Rev J. W. A. Mackenzie, after severe trial, sentenced to 12 calendar months' imprisonment with hard labour.

17th.-At Douglas Town Council meeting, the borough rate fixed at 3s Id.

17th.-Judgment given by the Clerk of the Rolls regarding distribution of £1,500 of the late Peter Baume's money. Peel benefited to the extent of £1,500.

20th--Death of Mr Thos. McKneale, C.P., of Lonan, aged 65.

21st.-Wholesale refusal of singing licenses by the Douglas Licensing Bench. The Bench consisted of the Mayor, Dr Marshall, Messrs W. Goldsmith, H. J. Clague, and W. M. Kerruish, and the High-Bailiff.

22nd.-Report of Insular Old Age Pension Census made public.

24th.-Death of Mr J. M. Nicholson, whose fame as an artist in water-colours was widely known; aged 73.

25th.-St. Ninian's Church, Douglas, dedicated for Divine worship.

27th.-Presentation to Rev C. H. and Mrs Leece, at Rushen, to recognise 16 years' faithful service. The Bishop made the presentation.

APRIL-

2nd.-House of Keys' heated discussion on the Medical Officer of Health and Dairies Bill. Rural members wrecked the bill.

2nd, 3rd; and 4th.-Annual Manx Music Festival held.

7th.-Death of Mr James Garrow in Now Zealand, aged 90 years, who was some 50 years ago Surveyor-General of Isle of Man.

7th.-Conference convened by the Vicar and Wardens of Braddan discussed alleged desecration of graves by the holding of season open-air services. It was subsequently decided to change the venue of the services to the " old fortification" below Kirby Farm.

7th.-Mr J. Corrin elected to Onchan Village Commissioners in place of Mr T'heophilus Hogg, lately deceased.

7th.-Laxey Village Commissioners levy an increase of 9d in the £, bringing the district rate up to ss in the £.

8th. In Tynwald, Mr R. S. Corlett announced his intention to desert Ayre at election time, and to fight Estate Duties against Mr Crennell in Ramsøy.

11th.-At annual meeting of the Douglas Lifeboat Committee, Lord Raglan presented Richard Connell (a Naval Reserve man in the employ of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company) with the Royal Humane Society award for saving a lad from drowning.

17th.-St. Mary's team win Football Association Cup, beating Castletown by 4 goals to 3.

21st.-Opening of the newly-built picturedrome in Walpole avenue, Douglas, under the name of The Pier Pavilion.

22nd.-Amended Vaccination Bill thrown out by the Legislative Council. Racecourse Licensing Bill was also rejected.

MAY-

2nd.-Annual meeting of Magistrates in Douglas. Resolution passed that the present constitution of the Licensing Court is unsatisfactory.-Moved by Mr J. A. Brown, J.P ; seconded by Mr G. Drinkwater, J.P.

3rd.-Messrs Holroyd and Son (Laxey) received an order from the King for Manx Ruskin homespun cloth.

10th.-Death of Mrs Farrant, widow of the late Mr Wm. Farrant, M.H.K.

15th.-At annual Convocation of clergy of the Manx Church, the. Bishop appealed flor the furthering of temperance in the Island.

16th.-Death of Rev R. Davidson, M.A., of Ramsey, Wesleyan supernumerary.

16th.-Manx Government financial statement for the year ending 31st March issued, showing decrease in surplus.

18th.-Centenary celebration of the Finch Hill Sunday-school, Douglas. Rev D. Inglis conducted suitable services. -

18th.-Opening of the Peel Guest House (Co-operative Holidays Association).

21st.-Practices for the Motor Tourist Trophy Race commenced.

24th.-Resignation of Rev A. Morris, Vicar of Michael, owing to ill-health.

28th.-Great walking match round the Island won by Mr H. Bridson in 18 hours 56 minutes.

29th.-" Marathon " race, Peel to Douglas, won by J. C. Cunningham in 1 hour, 13 minutes, 15 seconds.

JUNE-

1st.-Re-opening of Well Road Church, Douglas, after renovation.

3rd.-Licensing Appeal Court. Decisions of the Douglas Bench reversed.

4th.-Motor Tourist Trophy contests on the Manx course

4th.-Death in London of Mr John Christian Crellin, formerly M.H.K. of Andreas, aged 60 years.

11th.-Marriage of the Bishop's daughter-Miss Muriel Stanford Denton T'hompson to the Rev Wm. Alymer Rowlands, M.A.

13th.-Death of Mr Joseph Carr, of Douglas, aged 77 ex Town Councillor.

20th.-Manx Music Festival annual business meeting.-Resignation of Mrs Laughton as secretary.

20th.-Arbory Parochial Festival-Laa Columb Killey.

JULY-

5th.-Promulgation of laws from Tynwald Hill.

9th.-New steamer King Orry's maiden voyage Liverpool to Douglas.

17th.-Governor's minute issued concerning Constitutional Reform.

19th.-Opening, by Lord and Lady Raglan of Villa Marina Kursaal, the most handsome entertainment hall in the isle of Man. Erected by Mr Paul Rhodes, contractor, Leeds, to.thee designs of Messrs Robinson and Jones, architects, Leeds. There ,wee a civic ceremony in connection with the opening proceedings. The building of the Kurssal cost nearly £16,000.

21st.-Miss Vesta Tilley (Mrs Walter De Freece), the famous comedienne, opened The Coliseum, a spacious and beautiful annexe to The Palace, Douglas. The Coliseum is used as a variety theatre, and is reputed to be the largest in. Europe.

30th.-Two Douglas boarding-house keepers fined for shebeening.

AUGUST-

2nd.-Strand Cinema, Strand-street, opened.

13th.-Laxey Pavilion burnt down. Estimafted, damage, £4,000.

19th and 21st.-Melba concerts at the new Kursaal.

19th.-Fire at Mr R. Knox's engineering works, Douglas. Stock valued at £2,000 destroyed.

31st.-Mr Hugh Edwards, M.P., preaches and lectures in Finch Hill Church.

SEPTEMBER-

1st.-Rev J. W. A. Mackenzie released from gaol owing to ill-health.

1st.-Accident at the Ramsey lifeboat launch. Several people injured.

2nd.-Death at Peel of the Rev Robert Killip, aged 60 years, superannuated. Wesleyan minister and well-known astronomer.

3rd-Lord and Lady Raglan inaugurate the open access system at the Douglas Free Library.

16th.-Crisis caused by issue of Government circular against railing at bazaars. The Onchan Church Bazaar Committee, being involved, ultimately decided to comply with the Government warning.

17th.-First wedding solemnized at St. Ninian's Church.

18th.-Lord Raglan celebrates his 56th birthday.

28th.-Father Bernard Vaughan preached at St. Mary's R.C. Church. Sermon mainly directed against Mr Hall Caine's new book, " The Woman Thou Gavest Me."

28th.-Death of Miss Moffatt, a well-known and charitable Douglas lady.

OCTOBER-

2nd.-Death of the Rev Thos. Rippon at Hoylake. Mr. Rippon at one time was stationed in Douglas, and spoke strongly on " The Morals of Douglas."

4th.-Mr Charles Gill, a farm labourer, opened agitation for a farm labourers' union by holding a meeting at Ramsey.

7th.-Final sitting of the House of Keys. Constitutional Reform discussed and commended to the electorate.

9th.-The Reform Party of the House of Keys, with a view to advancing their cause over the Island, open campaign with a meeting in Rushen Sheading.

11th.-High-Bailiff Laughton's Reminiscences commenced in the " Examiner."

18th.-Record Manx season announced. Increase of 122,652visitors to the Island over any previous record. Total, 615,726. 18th.-Douglas Male Choristers defeated at choral contests at Blackpool.

27 h.-Dissolution of the House of Keys, its full term of five years having elapsed.

NOVEMBER-

10th.-Re-election of Alderman R. Corlett as Mayor of Douglas. Councillor J. T. Faragher appointed Deputy-Mayor.

12th.-Dramatic performance of the Rev T. E. Brown's poem, Betsy Lee," at the Coliseum, Douglas.

13th to 21st.-General Election of the House of Keys. Contests occurred in all the divisions and sheadings, excepting Castletown, where Lieut.-Colonel George Moore was returned unopposed. Votes cast for successful candidates:-

2nd.-First meeting of the newly-elected House of Keys. Mr Dalrymple Maitland re-elected Speaker.

2nd, 3rd, and 4th.-Isle of Man Fine Arts and Industrial Guild eighteenth annual exhibition at the Palace.

13th.-Issue of the EXAMINER ANNUAL for 1914..
