Although there were a number of false starts in introducing Freemasonry to the Island( in 1843 and again in late 1850s) the successful import took place from the late 1860s. In its early days it was associated with the non-Manx immigrants who ran the 'visiting' trade in Douglas though from the early 20th century it began to attract the native Manx.
