The author was the then Attorney-General in Man, C. Searle. The work is very
rare. The author makes some severe strictures upon the then existing laws, and
the manner in which they were administered, referring particularly to the Deemsters,
to Juries, and to the Spiritual Courts and their officers.,
In 1929 was presented to the Library of the Museum the MS. of a pamphlet, sarcastically
written, entitled " An Answer to a late Scurrilous Pamphlet entitled ' A Short
View of the Present State of Man.' Humbly submitted to all the world. By a Manks
Man. Nil habes infelix Pau¢ertas dureus in se Quam quod Ridiculos Hominet facit.-Hor."
The writer of the MS. appears to be the Rev. James Wilks, Vicar of Kirk Michael
(1752-1771), and Vicar-General.
