some years ago I did some research in the small but excellent Warrington Library local studies room - I recall having to use Bishop's transcripts that were on film there - St Elphins is a very old church site - possibly early registers were lost. The library should be on the web - maybe ask them as to where earlier records, if they exist, can be found.
