Illegitimate children at baptism

Hi Len,

On the parish registers I have seen they didn't actually baptise the child with the mother's name - that only happened in the IGI! Even when the father's name was given, the LDS Church transcribers chose to put the baby under the mother's surname, if illegitimate. Quite often the parents married soon after and the baby would have never have been known by the mother's surname, and even when they didn't marry, in the IOM the child was usually known by the father's surname - at least until the 1800s.

On the ones I have seen, the parish register would have something like "Mary illegitimate daur of x and x was baptised ... " etc., so no surname given for her.
