Ken, it's important to go to the right search page for whatever you're looking for, and to put in the bare minimum of info.
So, from the home page, click on "search records" on top horizontal bar. On next screen, don't fill anything in yet---click on International Genealogical Index on left hand vertical bar. Next screen is the one you want. Use it for:
1) searching for children of a couple whose names you know. So only fill in father/last name/mother/last name/year/ year range/region/country. Then search. This may produce what you hope to see. Trouble is, lots of baptism entries have father's name but only christian name of mother. So try this, use the "back" arrow and erase the mother's surname. Search again. Then you need to look carefully at each individual baptism, and discard the wrong ones. Also, any that say "patron submitted entry" treat with a big pinch of salt.
2) searching for a baptism or marriage. Only fill in first name/last name/ event/ year/ year range/ region/ country.
