A married father has no need to attend the Registry
Office to register the birth of his child he is assumed to
be the father of his wife's children. An unmarried man
needs to attend with his partner if he wishes to be recorded as the father of a child. It would in former times
be highly unusual for a husband to be actually present at
any birth. Registration was a lot to do with convenience. In
my family in that era Grandmother often walked miles to save
her daughter the journey & daughter's usually went home to
Mother for the birth. One man registered his child's birth as he
worked nearby the Registrar's every day.
