He was definitely born in Dartmouth, 1819/20. So he is 41 as shown on the census. I made a mistake saying he was 50. I had also been looking at 1871 at the time.

Of course, that doesn't solve the mystery of his rank in 1861! Presumably, the form was filled in by a person in authority (captain maybe).
