Hi Alan,
The entries which I said are unreliable are those ones on the IGI under "Messages" which say they have been provided from Church members. The "extracted" records (extracted from the parish register) are pretty good. Sometimes the Church members' ones replace the original extracted one and are the same, but the only way to be sure is to look at the film.
All those bapt entries I gave you with film numbers are extracted entries, as was the marriage, and are well worth checking for further details. You still don't know for sure which Thomas Cottier he was.
A US researcher, Carol, has sent these two possible entries for Thomas:
1841 US cenusus Ny, Ny Ward 13 ( remember the 1841 lists the name of head of household only)
Thomas Cotier
1 child under 5 male
1 male b/w 30 -40 years
1 child under 5 female
I female b/w 30-40 years
Ny Passenger lists
arr 30 May 1836 NY
est birth date 1811 age 25
dep Liverpool Ship New Orleans
Thomas Cotter 25 plasterer IOM
James Cotter 21 plasterer IOM
If Thomas went to NY first with his brother James, and Mary followed and had their last two children there, it makes it more likely that these were the sons of James Cottier and Cath Kissack:
Thos COTTIER Christening: 30 APR 1810 Saint George, Douglas.
James COTTIER Christening: 05 NOV 1815 Saint George, Douglas.
[Both bapts are extracted entries, available on LDS film no. 0106717]
