Re: Castletown deeds
In Response To: Re: Castletown deeds ()

Thank you Frances, and Nigel,

Interesting information about the boons and suits. It is hard to remember that, although we are reading deeds, that it wasn't actually the ownership of the property that was changing hands, but the right to rent it from the Lord (even though many (most ?) deeds do state Lord's rent ...) It makes sense that there would have to be service to keep things in repair -- if the Lord didn't farm the land, he most asuredly also didn't repair bridges!

In regard to the Castletown deeds, I looked at an index in early 1800s. Many of the names I saw were the same names as those in the index to South Side Sales, so I wondered if there was a reason to register them there. As I was looking at folks in Lonan parish, it seemed a long ways to go to Castletown, if they could, instead, have gone to Douglas.

I had decided to look at the Castletown index because there were some deeds I was expecting to find in the South Side Sales which weren't there (and I did find some in the Castletown index).

Interesting that the dates are listed as Hilary Term, Easter Term, Trinity Term, Michaelmas Term.

Thank you again for filling in the gaps in my information!

Lois
