Gellings Foundry was almost next door to the Gasworks
on South quay. My Dad served an apprenticeship there
after leaving school in 1912. During WW1 they made
munitions ---yes I know next to the gasworks ! Perhaps
they just made the shellcases which went elsewhere to
be filled. I have one on my desk as I write , a macabre
souvenir--I guess.
You may be interested to hear that to get to the Gas company offices you could cross the harbour by rowing
boat ferry. I suspect this was a free trip on business.
