I was intrigued to see whether there was any connection between David Moffatt and the Samuel Benjamin Moffatt, schoolteacher b circa 1818 who was the subject of a thread of messages here in October 08.
Frances's link to the page on Robert Aitken led to this:
Sacred to the memory of David Moffat, Surgeon of the late 3rd Ceylon Regt. Born at Dalkeith, near Edinburgh, on the 1st of June 1787, died at Eyreton in this parish on the 16th of July 1844, aged 63 years. Also Eliza Alison, daughter of the above, born at Crosby in this parish, 5 Feb 1836, died at Crosby on the 1 April 1837, aged 18 months. Also Thomas Peter Moffat, son of the above, died the 6 May 1864, aged 30 years.
Since the age at death and birth / death dates don't stack up, I looked in Familysearch and found David Moffatt's parents "Peter Moffatt and Helen Mark" and a birth date (patron submission ) of 1st June 1781 ( rather than 1787 from the Old St Runius MI )
These children of Peter Moffatt and Helen / Nelly Mack are listed as patron submissions ( apart from May, which is an extracted entry )

I didn't find a link to Samuel Benjamin Moffatt. Could he have been a nephew of David ?
