Hi Martin,
Unfortunately, I don't know why he came to Utah, or even the US. He seems to have moved quite a bit, so I'm not sure if he had difficulties with work or was just like to try new places. He married in Utah in 1896, was in Colorado for the 1900 census, and was in Nevada for the 1910 census. He died in Nevada in 1912. The was long before my mother was born and while she knew that he was born in the Isle of Man, that's about all she knew about him.
As for his birth place, my mother had told me he was born there, but obviously that's not "proof". His death certificate, with information provided by his daughter, indiactes that his birthplace was Isle of Man. In the 1900 census, Isle of Man was listed, then crossed out and replaced with England. 1910 says Ire-English (not quite sure what that is supposed to mean) and the 1920 census says that the birthplace for all of his children's father was Isle of Man.
According to the 1910 census he was a naturalized citizen. The immigration date is either 1871 or 1891, but is hard to read on the image. If it's 1871, he would have come with his parents.
