Before my visit to the IOM in July, my cousin sent me a page from the Marown Old St Runius MI list giving the plot numbers and wording.
On a beautiful summer evening we located the headstones ( the churchyard is idyllic, peaceful and well tended ) and took photographs.
Yesterday, as I was searching through Malew MIs in Manx Notebook, I happened across several which are definitely in Marown OSR (comparing them with my photos.) Here are 2 examples:
From Old St Runius MIs-----
226. Sacred to the memory / of ROBERT GELLING of BALNAGRUE / who departed this life on the / 8th day of January 1807 / aged 63 years a loving husband, a tender / parent and a sincere friend,
227. In memory of / ROBERT GELLING / of BALLA-GRAWE in this parish who / departed this life the 5th day of / September Anno Domini 1835 in / the 60th year of his age / He lived much beloved by his family / and friends and died greatly lamented / by all who knew his worth / Behold he taketh away who can hinder him / who will say unto him what does't thou? / Job chap IX ver XII.
---and from the Malew list in MNB:
Sacred to the memory of Robert Gelling of Balnagrue, who departed this life on the 8th day of January 1807, aged 76 years.
In memory of Robert Gelling of Ballagrawe in this parish, who departed this life on the 5th day of September Anno Dommi 1835 in the 60th years of his age.
(The "age 63 years" / "age 76 years" discrepancy is solved by looking at the photo---it's 63.)
The Malew list in MNB has several other MIs which I'm pretty sure also belong to OSR. Is this something that's been reported previously ?
Are the differences in the above examples perhaps because they were from readings from the headstones done many years apart when the lettering had become more difficult to decipher ?
