William Barry

Hi,
My GG.Grandfather William Barry, 1799, Limerick, married Mrs Elizabeth Cowley in Douglas, 1843. The Manx Sun reported the marriage and referred to him as 'late hostler for Mr Batty's Circus Royal'. I can next trace him as being the landlord of the Manx Tavern, Lord Street, Douglas where Elizabeth died in 1846. I have been sent a will for Elizabeth and it would seem that she left William very comfortable in terms of money and property. He lived the rest of his life at 11 Church street where, according to census returns, he was a grocer and purveyer of wine. In 1850 he married Mary Wilkinson in Douglas, his occupation is Huckster. On all census returns his wife Mary is living at 3 Myrtle Street, Douglas, as a 'lodging house keeper'. I am not sure if they separated or ran two businesses that kept them apart during the week. William is buried in an unmarked grave. Family stories say that he had shares in the Isle of Man Mineral Works.

Can anyone tell me if Huckster means anything other than a seller of shoddy goods? How I can discover who owned 11, Church Street and 3 Myrtle Terrace? How I discover if he was a shareholder in the Mineral Works?

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Diane Williams
