Hi there, I posted on here some time ago about an ancestor of mine called James Carkin(born 1871). On the 1901 census he is listed as being born in Ireland. This is something that my family fiercely does not believe to be true, the story goes that the Carkins came from the Isle of Man, and were Quakers. I was told that the spelling of their name would most certainly have been changed when they came to England, to make things easier. I am still chasing up the IOM story, because I think that there is some truth in it. Does anyone know what the pronunciation of Kaighin is? is it like Carkin? Also, does anyone know why someone who is a Quaker would leave the Island? Any help at all would be appreciated as I am getting nowhere. Thanks
