The weather was terribly bad .It was very dark in the
harbour just a few lamps -the piers were being built.
Some people were trying to help but there was little they could do. The local men were being paid by the
Captain to try & save his ship. As I explained the lifeboat was not well placed to be launched & the men
all drowned when their little rowing boat capsized. "Thousands " according to the paper " watched " in the dark
but I think it meant crowds. The crew had already got
themselves safely to dry land . The was salvaged later.
