Dearest Donna,
How can I ever begin to thank you for all this wonderful information. It will be of such benefit in filling out the pedigree tree charts and bringing much more meaning to our trip to England and IOM in May 2008.
I am overwhelmed with the amount of progress you made in such a short period of time. You are surely a genealogical "Pro."
All the info you provided on "locations" is wonderful as we wish to visit churches, cemeteries etc.
Some questions if I may? Where is St. Barnabas Church located? Does it still exist?
Third generation...William Kennaugh. I think he was born about 1849. Do you have a birth date? He is not listed on the 1881 census. I wonder if he was a mariner and possibly at sea? I have no info on him at all. He is a mystery. Date of death? Burial location? Occupation?
Under your item #5... "in affectionate rememberance".... do you think Elizabeth and Eleanor are the same person? It does not make sense to me the way it reads.
Does St. Mathews church still exist? Location? Is the Douglas Borough Cemetary at the Church? Can you provide days and times that the church.cemetery are open? Can they provide help in locationg the various graves?
I have another REAL mystery I am trying to solve. Perhaps you can be of some assistance.
My grandmother, Amy Kennaugh nee: Woods,
was born in Douglas 1n 1880. She married William Woods in 1901. All of this is, of course, in your info. They had 3 children...William Woods Kennaugh born 1905 in Barrow (my father), James Kennaugh born 12/1909 in Barrow and Ethel also born in Barrow. My grandmother brought herself and the two boys to the US in 1922 through Quebec , Canada. Ship was "Montrose." She was joining her brother, Albert Woods, in San Francisco, California, USA. The father, William Kennaugh, died in Birkenhead, England in 1913 and is buried at Braddan Parish, IOM (see your item #5). I have no details as to his young death and am not sure why he was away from his wife Amy and the children whom I believe were in Barrow. At date of marriage, William was listed as a "postman."
STOP:
The two paragraphs below got out of order somehow. Please read these as being separate items and then I'll continue with the main subject and question.
Item #6... FYI... William Woods and Mary Ann Cannell were married in Liverpool 4-5-1863. Item #6 Under "1881." reference to Albert Woods.
Albert came to the US in 1903 but I cannot find any ship's manifest for his entry. I believe he left from Liverpool. I have checked immigration entry through Boston, New York and Canada but no luck. Do records exist for DEPARTURES from Liverpool which may provide me with the name of the ship?
CONTINUE WITH MAIN ITEM:
My "struggle" is with little Ethel, my dad's sister. She was born in Barrow on 11-11-1907. I have the actual birth certificate. My understanding of her death (from my Dad) was that she "died at a young age in a fire." I believe the fire was in Barrow.
My "death research" indicates a death registration date in March 1909 in Barrow. However, I also have burial information which indicates DOD 3/28/1908 in Barrow and burial at Braddan Parish, IOM 3/31/1908.( refer to Memorial Inscription Index #2348.). The MI index # 1673 lists William Kennaugh, her father, and Eleanor Kennaugh, her grandmother (William's mother). BUT MI #2348 shows an age at death of 17 months. How can that be if she is born 11/07 and is buried 3/08???? I'm almost certain this is the correct Ethel but there is doubt. I have never run across a"second Ethel Kennaugh" in all my genealogy work! The death was registered 3/1909, long after DOD.
Do you have any thoughts on the above? Can dates be incorrect on the records?? I think a death certificate will provide enough info (eg name of informant, etc. ) to help solve this. What do you think?
I plan to visit England and IOM this May and am anxious to resolve the Ethel issue.
I have several locations (churches, cemeteries, etc ) to visit in IOM and my thought was to hire a "guide" who is familiar with the sites, their"open" times. etc. and could drive us to the sites. This would be a great help and conserve a great deal of time for us. Do you know of any such persons who do this type of thing?
Donna, once again thank you so very, very much for your kind help. I appreciate your time and help.
Kindest regards,
William Kennaugh
