the MNH description is ok for family historians but hides the truth - the Treen is probably the oldest division - treens were gathered into sheadings but whether these are Norse or a later grouping is still debated. Parishes came along in the 12th century and in all cases bar one comprised a group of contiguous treens (Santon/Marown boundary however divides a treen) - quarterlands are sub divisions of treens generally called balla... (roughly translated as farmstead) but the balla designation has become used for other smaller divisions
