Bruce - thanks so much for this it has been really helpful. I know there is a lot of confusion about Crowleys and Crawleys.
I have established I think that John and Joseph Parfitt are the same person - as a john Parfitt appears on the 1881 Isle of Man trades list for 6 Post Office Place which is where my family were living and I have found him in earlier censuses.
I am however very confused about whether Margaret Anne Parfitts mother was Margaret or Martha - I suppose it is possible that it could have been Margaret and that she died and John married Martha after - it tends not to distinguish in the census I find!
I have discovered that Margaret Anne married James Lambert Crowley who died on the Ellan Vannin disaster in 1909 which has given me a little more information.
Their eldest daughter Winifred moved to England and married my great grandfather. I am interested to see what happened to her siblings (7) of them I believe and whether they remained on the Isle of Man.
