That would fit with emigration of Thomas as young single man who married in Canada (typical it would seem of the later emigration as compared with the earlier 1820's family based emigration) - the Thomas I suggested would have a step-mother which is often a basis for early departure from the family.
Wouldn't earlier Canadian censuses indicate his country of birth ?
