Hi Debra,
We corresponded years ago about your ancestors William Sayle & his wife Ann Brew, when I was researching Brew. Their son William who went to America was bapt in Maughold on 20 June 1847.
Averil has asked me to look up Maughold records which I didn't have when last writing to you.
In the 1851 census William aged 3 is in Maughold with father William aged 35 farming 22 acres at Mount? Sayle, mother Ann 25, and his siblings Thomas 5, Alice 6, Cathrine A? 1, all b. Maughold. Also with them is niece Elizabeth Sayle 19 and visitor Ann J Teare 4 m.
The 1861 census - the last one before William left the IoM:
1 39 Behalushag House
William SAYLE Head MAR 45 Farmer of 23 acres Maughold
Ann SAYLE Wife MAR 35 Maughold
Alice SAYLE Daughter UNM 16 Maughold
William SAYLE Son UNM 14 Maughold
Emma SAYLE Daughter UNM 12 Maughold
Sophia SAYLE Daughter UNM 10 Maughold
Ann SAYLE Daughter UNM 8 Maughold
Eva SAYLE Daughter UNM 4 Maughold
In censuses William Sayle's age is given consistently as b.c.1816 in Maughold, but the only possible William seems to be bapt 10 July 1814 Maughold, the son of John Sayle & Margt Garret, as you have.
These children were bapt in Maughold:
William [son of] John Sayle/ Margaret Garret [bapt] Parish Church 10 Jul 1814
Thomas John Sayle/ Margaret Garrett Parish Church 18 Aug 1811
Isabella Anne John Sayle/ Margaret Garrett Parish Church 22 Dec 1816
- with other children bapt in Bride, and the first one bapt in Andreas the same year they were married [IGI].
From the details in the marriage Mary looked up for you, for John Sayle and Margaret Garrett, it looks as though Margaret was under the age of 21 (had father's permission to marry), that her father was Daniel Garrett, and that she came from Andreas.
This looks like her bapt., from the IGI: Margret bapt 17 DEC 1775 Andreas daur of DANL GARRET & JONEY CHRISTIAN.
It could be useful to order this will on LDS film from a Family History Centre:
GARRETT, Daniel 1811 And A 57 0106238
[from Brian Lawson's website].
If it is the correct will for her father it should give you confirmation that this is the right family, plus information about other relatives.
John Sayle was of Bride at his marriage in 1794. You have him as b.14 Dec. 1766 Ramsey, died Nov.1827. Did this information come from a will? Because with the number of Sayle families, you really need wills/decrees to be sure you have the correct ones. There were several John Sayles born that year, with some from Andreas.
Perhaps: SAYLE, John 1828 Mau A 47 0106245? [Brian Lawson's index]
The Maughold parish register has John SAYLE (P.E.Vullin) buried Nov 20 1827, so the above will could be his.
Margaret SAYLE aged 73 buried Maughold Feb 1 1848, who could be Margaret Garrett.
Would you please post any information you have from wills, etc., and I can look further in Maughold records for you.
Sue
