Thomas Quine and Alice Costean
Marriage Contract 1737
Articles of marriage condefconded unto and concluded and agreed upon by & between Wm Costean of the Parish Kk Santan with the consent of Margaret his wife for and in behalf of their daugt. Alice Costeanon the one part, and Thomas Quine of the said Parish in his own behalf on ye. other part – as foll.
First. It is concluded and agreed upon that the above Thos Quine & Alice Costean shall enter into the Holy State of Matrimony afsoon as conveniently may be God & Holy Church permitting.
Sec..ly It is concluded & agreed upon that the said Wm Costean and Margt. his wife do promise and oblige themselves to deliver and settle upon their said daugt. by way of Dowry all their purchased Lands in Ballafurt to be pofssfsed by the sd young couple at Machmas in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and forty, they the sd young couple then tendering unto the sd Wm Costean or Exe. and afsigns the sum of five pounds Manks value and to be at the expence of fencing the premifses with the adjacent neighbours.
3.ly It is concluded and agreed upon that if it shall please God that either of the sd young couple shall decease within one year & a day of the marriage the surviving party is to receive a legacy of ten pounds that out of the deceafsed effects.
And to the performances hereof all parties concerned to bind and oblige themselves either to other in the penalty and forfsiture of fifty pounds sterling to be levied according to Law – In Testimo = my whosof they have hereunto xx their names & marks this 6th Day of Jan.1737

Catherine Quine, daughter of Alice Quine alias Costean
Marriage Contract 27th June 1764
Articles of marriage covenanted concluded & agreed upon by and between Thos Cowley of the Parish of Kk Braddan on behalf of his son Robt Cowley on the one part and Alice Quine als Costean, widow of the Parish of Kk Santan. In behalf of her daughter Catherine Quine on the other part as follows.
First it is agreed upon that the young couple shall enter into the holy state of matrimony within fourteen days after the date hereof God and Holy Church permitting the same.
2ndly Ther ? Thos Cowley doth hereby covenant and oblige himself to give by way of dowry with his xxxxx and his intended wife two cows and a dousin of sheep one of said cows to be delivered to them in six months after the date hereof and the other cow and said dousin of sheep to be delivered and paid them after her decease.
3rdly Thed said Alice Quine als Costean doth hereby settle and estate upon her daughter Catherine Quine and Robt Cowley here intended husband (as shall be hereafter mentioned that is to say) All that parcel of land she had situated near Grenich ? Habour in sd Parish of Kk Santan being part of the quarterland of Ballfurt known by the name of xxxxfurt (faarfurt ?) and the Creggan bearing on shilling & eight pence Lords Rent or thereabouts and another parcel of the Quarterland of Glantraigh adjoining forsd parcel known by the name of Crofthome ? (Crotthomy?) bearing a shilling Lords Rent or thereabouts the one half to be forfeited by the sd Catherine and her intended husband at the expiration of eight years and the other half after her decease with all its appertainances thereunto belonging. Receiving the house on the premises wholly to herself during her natural life.
4thly In consideration of the fore sd settlement made by Alice Quine als Costean the sd Robt Cowley & his intended wife doth hereby bind & oblige themselves to pay unto the sd Alice Quine twenty pounds thereof to be in hand paid beside the ten pounds bequeathed to sd Catherine by her father with the other ten pounds to be paid in manner following that is to say five pounds thereof to be paid at the expiration of five years and the remainder five pounds to be paid when sd Cowley and his intended wife pofsefses the one half of the premises.
Lastly it is covenanted and agreed upon that in case the sd Alice Quine als Costean shall depart this life before her sons In ? & Thos Quine or either of them shall be of age that then and in such case the sd Robt Cowley and his intended wife doth hereby bind and oblige themselves to raze and maintain the sd In ? & Thos Quine and likewise keep them to school until they arrive each of the to the age of fifteen years – and it is further agreed upon that if the sd Alice Quine als Costean shall marry at any time hereafter that then & in such care the sd Robt Cowley & his intended wife shall enter on pofsefsion of her half of the premises at her intermarriage –
And for the true and faithfull performance hereof & of every article and clause herein contained all parties concerned do bind & oblige themselves under the penalty of one hundred pounds to be paid in the Nature of all fines within this Isle.
