I have been looking for the origin of our last name for over a decade. There seem to be 50 "Gerrey"s, all in the U.S., which makes me wonder if the name got changed as people entered the country and the person writing their name did the best they could but got it wrong. Or maybe people WANTED to change their name as they changed their country.
However, finding the word "gerrey" in the Manx dictionary give us new hope that we can find our origins. And it makes sense with the other information we have about Huguenots in France, Mom's Scottish name, and Grandmother from Cornwall, Grandfather from Boston.
"Gerrey" is part of a phrase that means "to arrive" or "approach".
It's not the same as "Gorry," but it may have been changed at Ellis Island.
