The very few Irish 'directory enquiries' I've made tend to support the view that Gorrys were thin on the ground:
Henry Shaw's Dublin City directory lists no Gorrys, while the 1846-64 Primary Valuation Property survey gives an all-Ireland figure of 28, most of them in inner counties, and the Irish Midlands Ancestry site says that in 1865, in the whole of Ireland, only 10 Gorry births were registered - all of them in Tullamore. Not conclusive, but an indicator I think.
Thanks for pointing me in this direction - if nothing else it may eliminate a possibility, or, of course, confirm one. I'll let you know what I find.
