Hi all,
I had taken a break from the Sheards for a bit, but decided to take a look at 'ancient' posts. It's a shame I can't get in touch with the people that did place earlier posts about the Sheards.
I'm still unsure if the John Sheard from Ovenden has anything to do with the John Sheard from Bradford. ( As stated on the Manx notebook )
I have down a John Sheard c1869 from Bradford marrying a Grace Sugden in Bradford. They had a son John c1895 born Bradford. Grace must have died ( or he did a bunk! ) but I can't find anything to confirm Grace's death.
On the manx notebook, it states that John Sheard from Ovenden was possibly John snr's son.
I sent off for the discharge papers of both these John Sheards. On the notes of the younger John Sheard, it states that he was intended to live in London. If I read the papers right, he was in North America for nearly 6 years from 1814.
There was another John Sheard who was also in the army, born Bradford c1795 who I believe to be John snr's son, and the one that settled on the IoM.
Details from the National archives
JOHN SHEARD
Born WHIPSEY, Yorkshire
Served in 54th Foot Regiment
Discharged aged 24
Covering dates 1817-1820
Whipsey is in the area that John snr and Grace were from. The discharge year also coincides with the marriage yr of John jnr to Sarah Greenhow .
What has always baffled me is why John snr who married Elizabeth Corkhill would name another son, John ( my husband's GtGt Grandfather c1816 Peel ).
If anyone is definately related to the John Sheard from Ovenden, I would happily copy the notes and forward them. I would like to keep the copies I received from the archives though, just incase I can match them up in any way.
