Having just double-checked the 1901 census I am afraid I missed something quite important the first time around. Frederick A Gill (age 29) - born Castletown -is living ("off his own means") in Wellesbourne Hastings in Warwickshire which is just 20 miles away from Rugby. Frederick Agnew Gill was supposed be part of the Rugby Polo Club contingent although he was "lent" to the Bagatelle Club of Paris when they were a player short. Apologies if any of this is common knowledge on the island and I'm showing a gap in my own knowledge. My excuse is that the British Olympic Association are just as ignorant. It could well be that a Manxman won an Olympic medal over a century ago. Maybe the sportsroom at Manx Radio might be interested!
