Re: CORKILL FAMILY FROM RAMSEY/MAUGHOLD

Hello Joe,
Thanks for the additional information you sent.
The William you asked about originally wasn't from Ramsey. He was from a farming family at Ballagorry Mooar, Maughold, but I don't know what happened to his descendants apart from his children's baptisms (in my last message).
I am having a problem finding the connection to this William Corkill 1779-1855, from the details you sent.

Tracing back from your James Louis Corkill b 1872, I see that there were two James Lewis Corkills bapt that year. One in Andreas, and one in Maughold, but only one James L Corkill that I could see in the 1881 census (the Maughold one), the son of Thomas Corkill & Margaret Kinrade.

James Louis Corkill's marriage in Maughold has:
1 Jul 1894
Louis CORKILL Full age Bachelor Baker Ramsey, [father] Thomas Corkill, Labourer ~ and ~
Norah EDWARDS Full age Spinster Ramsey, [father] John Thomas Edwards, Sweep.

In 1881 Thomas's age is 39, and Margaret's is 40.
The IGI has their ages at marriage in Ramsey on 29 June 1861 as husband 21 and wife 22.

There are four Thomas Corkill baptisms in Maughold who could fit that age at marriage, including the one you gave, and his age in the 1881 census was younger - he could have increased his age to 21 so that he wouldn't have to get permission to marry. - This gives us a fifth Thomas Corkill bapt in Maughold who fits the 1881 census age, who could be the Thomas who married Margaret Kinrade.

The 1841 census has two Thomas Corkills aged 6 months, one aged 1, and one aged 4 months. (If the 1881 age was correct he wouldn't have been born at the time of the census.)

It would be a good idea to check their ages in the 1891 and 1901 censuses as well.

Could you tell me whether you have other records which show that Thomas's parents were Robert Corkill and Catherine Kermeen, e.g. wills, or family bible?

And also why you think Robert was the one b.1811, the son of William Corkill 1779-1855? There were numerous Robert Corkills bapt in the early 1800s in Maughold - but firstly you need to be certain that you have the right parents for Thomas Corkill.
