Hello. I was just reminded about this web site. I don't believe I've posted here in quite a while !
I am descended from John and Esther (?) CORKILL from the Lezayre Parish. They married there in 1822, I believe, and they reportedly had 10 children. I only have the names of half of them.
Their oldest was John CORKILL, then they had a son, Evan CORKILL, born there in 1827.
Both sons seem to have moved to Liverpool, England, around the time of their marriages. And, I think more of their family did, also !
Evan was a Master Mariner, and he remained in that position for most of his life !
Evan married Elizabeth QUAYLE who was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland/Cumbria, England around 1852 in Liverpool, England. They had 7 children that I know of !
They had 2 sons, William? CORKILL, and Lewis CORKILL during the 1850's. Then they had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth CORKILL, b1860 Liverpool. Mary would become my great-grandmother.
When Mrs. Elizabeth CORKILL died around 1871, the children seem to have gone to live with their uncle (John CORKILL). But, when the "Liverpool Sheltering Homes" opened in 1873, the 5 children were taken there ! The younger children were Julia, Esther, John, and Robert CORKILL.
In 1874, they were "shipped to Canada" as "child migrants" (English term) (Canadian term: "British Home Children") At the time the children were 14 down to Age 3.
The 3 daughters married not too many years after arriving, and had many children. John, 5, and Robert, 3, when they arrived in Nova Scotia didn't fare so well. John married later in life and had no children, and Robert was still single in his 30's.
I have recently heard from a lady who thinks she might be descended from John and Esther CORKILL's daughter, Margaret CORKILL.
I would like to hear from others who think they might be descended from them.
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
P.S. Evan and Elizabeth's 2 older sons seem to have remained in Liverpool, and probably also became Mariners, or worked on the Docks ! I have not yet tried to research who they married, etc.
P.S. 2 I would like to be able to see the names in John and Esther's family in the 1841 Census.
P.S. 3 I am writing this from memory, as I haven't researched the family in a while.
