Whilst researching my Callin family I have come across four policemen from the IOM in Toxteth Park in 1881 (there may well be more).
William Callin, 26, Thomas Cowin, 26 (his brother-in-law), Thomas Shimmin, 22 (boarding with William) and James Cowell, 23. William's descendents later went to Canada and Thomas Cowin went to Australia.
My great grandfather, Robert Callin was the IOM Gaoler for some time, having first been a policeman.
Why all these policemen in my family, but why so many in Liverpool?
Does anyone know if there was recruitment in the IOM for policemen to go and work in Liverpool?
