Canney comes from the index. Whoever looked at the page tried to interpret the handwriting. If you look at the actual page you can see that it says Canning. If you are not familiar with the area for which you are creating the index you can make some big mistakes. That's what makes searching the census such an interesting experience.

In the Ancestry index for 1871, the handwriting of the census taker having been very 'curly', they ended up being listed as Banning...
