While scrolling through old parish registers recently it occurred to me that you never seem to see Manx christian names - the odd Joney, Nessy, Bahee, maybe, but never the well-known Juan, Voirrey, Illiam, etc. Does anyone know why that is? Were they ALWAYS translated by the cleric, were they not as common as we're led to believe, or were they just nicknames?
