Thank you everybody, that is much clearer to me now. So basically, a lot of us will have difficulty in correctly identifying an ancestor if an illegitimate child takes the father's name, when only the mother's name appears on the parish register (and it does seem quite frequent from the few films I've studied so far). I'll just keep trying!
