Can someone please explain for me? When reading parish baptism registers, some entries are marked base-born or illegitimate, while others in the same register give just the mother's name. Is it safe to assume these are illegitimate too? Also I notice a lot of parents with different surnames. Was it conventional to use the mother's maiden name, or were they unmarried? Which surname would the child take if both parents are named but they are not married? I have looked in the Manx Notebook but didn't quite find the answers.
Thanks in advance
Susan
