Re: Origins of Manx Names
In Response To: Re: Origins of Manx Names ()

I was brief but not rude, someone else mentioned sarcasm not I - 'Manx names' covers personal names, family names and place names - if you go to Manxnotebook the subject index (on 1st paragraph of main index page) gives immediate access to all three; also links to the primary reference books (after all not everything on the web is correct) from which I gleaned any additional info - If you had been more specific and asked re the name 'Skillicorn' I could have immediately answered that it derives from a Lancashire village (after all the Island was a Lancashire colony for some 300 years !) and on MNB there is section from an 17th C map showing the older forms of those names from which several Manx family names derive - again plugging Skillicorn into the search page on MNB would give you access to that (see W W Gill's book).

I'm not sure what other question you refer to - you raised a general question re Tuberculosis which I gave you ref to a broad historical survey paper that IMO gave a good summary (even though it was based on Swedish data but I understand the Tubercolis bacillii havn't yet managed to read passports) - since then you will find I have scanned in the 1899 paper (which IMO wrongly attributes it to inbreeding but does mention the high amount of infected cattle + cramped living conditions, tubular teachers such as Hall Caine's uncle couldn't have helped either) - the early reports of the Manx MoH from early 20th C(again on my site) also mention the high but reducing rate - after that I'm afraid you are on your own, research at Manx Museum is pleasant but time consuming as I'm sure you know - the archivist there is not aware of any recent work on historical Manx TB statistics as I asked specially - I'll be happy if you wish to publish any research you do on the subject.

(I could give ref to an excellent web page on how to ask questions on MB's but being designed for geeks I suspect the blunt wording may turn you off)
