Thanks for that. All very fascinating. I will definitely check those sites. One time I was on the Island in recent years I got some very interesting photos of Civil Service No. 6 from the Manx Museum - apparently there were two boats of that name - and a brief history of the Douglas station, but I am really hoping for crew lists and service histories, if they exist. I believe there is an enthusiasts' club in Coventry of all places if I can track down the address.

James McQuiggin senior - yes, I would expect this to be the father of 1874 james as the age is correct. As for John Moore, I don't really know why I quoted him, except that in the back of my mind I know there are Moores connected to my direct line in several places, but I don't actually know who John is so won't trouble you with him.
Thanks for your efforts to locate James junior. I would love to find out where/when he met his end - I recollect my grandmother in Douglas keeping a newspaper cutting refering to his drowning, but this was 40 years ago and I don't remember anything useful like a date on it.
