Re Daniel Looney & Esther Christian.
I am overwhelmed by the response which I have had on this topic! So thank you Jenny; Bruce; Sue; Clive and Averil. The family groups that you have posted from the Maughold Parish data in the I.G.I. match up exactlly with my findings. One thing though, which I must confess Averil, is that I cannot prove that the Daniel Looney marriage (Nov. 6th 1813 @ Lonan ) with Ann Cowin was my 2x great grandfather's first as I have not seen the actual marriage certificate for his marriage to Esther Christian @ Patrick. He would have been just 20 years old in 1813, but I think that it is not an unreasonable assumption to make that the family with it's tragic infant deaths at Maughold would have been his? Isabel & John died of smallpox, and I have William baptised Sept. 6th 1818 dying in 1826 also at Maughold. I cannot find a burial for Jane Cowin in Lonan; Maughold or any of the adjoining parishes. If this was not a first marriage for Daniel then Averil's hypothesis re the possibility of either Robert Looney & Jane Creer, or Ewan Looney & Mary Taggart being his parents has to be considered. I rejected both on the grounds that both the 1841 census and that of 1851 indicate that Daniel was born c. 1790. Ewan, I also rejected as his Christian name does not appear to have been bestowed on any of Daniel's male progeny. In my own mind I favour the possibilty that John Looney and Margaret Hutchen were Daniel Parents, if only because they appear to have had two attempts at having a Daniel (1782 & 1789 ). Daniel & Esther Christian used both the names John & Margaret for their children. Not very scientific I know!
Jennifer mentions the William Looney (b.c. 1836 ) who appears as a joiner in the 1861 census with his wife Elizabeth Jane, and son William Henry. I believe that this lady was the Elizabeth Jane Quayle who married a William Looney at Braddan on Sept. 12th 1857. She was almost certainly William Looney's first wife. When he married my great grandmother Elizabeth Thomas ( b. c.1840 at Llanfair P.G. Anglesey ) on May 24th 1873 Toxteth Park Liverpool he was styled as a widower, master joiner; and son of Daniel Looney master joiner! My late aunt once showed me William's bible. Inside the flyleaf he had recorded the following:- William Henry Nov. 3rd 1858; Elizabeth Jane May 2nd 1861; Esther Christian Nov. 23rd 1863; and Harriet May 30th 1865. My aunt confirmed that Esther Christian and Harriet were her father's sisters. There was one further entry :- E.L. Sept 8th 1868. I wonder if that was his wife Elizabeth Jane's death. I could not find that entry in the General Register. The 1901 census records Esther Christian Looney was born in Lancashire. Again I can not find that entry in the General Register.
John Thomas Looney and my grandfather Robert Looney were the only known sons of William and Elizabeth Thomas. Both of them were born in Liverpool.
