Mary and Bruce - the Ellis Island Immigration site is excellent, however, their records are only from 1892-1924, and do not include the 1850s. Following from their website:

"The Ellis Island Archives

More than 22 million passengers and members of ships' crews entered the United States through Ellis Island and the Port of New York between 1892 and 1924."
