Thanks Bruce. You’ve added some useful info for me.
William E. is my grt g/f. I’d found out that his parrents were Edward and Eleanor (Skelly). Hadn’t traced Eleanor’s family at all so that bit is very useful.
I have a problem with Edward. The IGI has 2 Edwards christenings!
18 MAR 1853 Kirk Rushen, Parents: Thomas Watterson, Cath Gorree
01 AUG 1852 Kirk Rushen, Parents : William Watterson, Jane Millar
In 1891 census Eleanor is a widow, which makes it likely that the Edward age 37, buried 24 Nov 1889 at Arbory is my one. This would point more towards Edward being son of William and Jane Millar, but that depends on how old the two Edwards were when they were baptised. Hence my earlier ramblings about dob. What was the custom for baptisms? Did they tend to happen very quickly after birth?
I had names etc for 1891 census but not a location. Sat in the Colby Clen with a pint or two on a few occassions in complete ignorance of the fact that some of my family had lived there for a while.
I only stumbled upon Richard and Robena Watterson last week whilst searching the IGI. It solved a mystery for me, as I’d often wondered how my grandmother ended up with the rather unusual middle name of Robena. She obviously “inherited” it from her father’s younger sister.
