Margaret - it may be worthwhile to read the book The Manx Family Tree: A Beginners Guide to Records in the Isle of Man - 3rd ed by J. Narasimham, N. Crowe and P. Lewthwaite. 2000 - it provides an excellent guide to what records are available and how to obtain and interpret them. It may also be worthwhile to read one of the many family history magazines now on sale, most of which include a guide to using the International Genealogical Index (tho usually in an English context) - also have a look at www.manxnotebook.com/famhist/genealgy/refs.htm (or via the tab bar at top of page)
