Re: Help clarifying birthplaces

Many thanks again for your help, Brian. This provides a useful insight into how to read census material and has certainly given me food for thought.

Further research has possibly shed a little more light on the conflicting birthplaces. I believe John's parents were John Killey and Mary Callow and they were in fact married in 1804 in the parish of Patrick. Also, their second child Margaret was baptised in 1808 in Patrick. It was presumably after this birth that the family moved to Santon, where John's and most of the subsequent baptisms are recorded. This, then, might explain why John has initially listed his birthplace as Patrick but his baptism is recorded in Santon.

In the case of his wife Jane, I take your point about using the most convenient church. It may well have been that Jane was born and resided in Rushen but was actually baptised in the nearest church, ie Arbory. It's impossible to know for certain but, given the short distances involved, I think it's certainly plausible.

Thanks again.
