Brian, Your childhood memories certainly coincide with mine. There were internment camps at the Granville and the Regent, which later became H.M.S. Valkyrie. I vaguely remember the Sefton being a camp. We must have been able to walk on the other side of the promenade and get to certain parts of the shore as I remember my little brother sailed his new sandals out on the water for his soldier daddy to see. It probably sticks in my mind because my mother was so upset as she didn't have enough clothing coupons to replace them.
