suspect you are mis-reading the typical 19th use of the word - see T .E. Brown describing cows
They're that sollum and lovin' and studdy [steady] and wise,
And the butter meltin' in their big eyes !

steady means here (and elsewhere I've seen it used in terms of character - not given to changes of mood etc)
