It is well-attested that Manx emigrants often adopted second names or initials after they left the Isle in order to distinguish themselves from other immigrants. This would be particularly so with names not exclusively Manx such as Cain/Kane, Kelly, etc
Evidence to this effect was given in a Manx Court in the Ballaneddin heirship case early last century.
