Hello Barbara:
Your question caught my eye because I have both Gelling and Kewley, but I didn't recognize any of your names. So I did a bit of digging. So far I found a reference to Oscar Frederick Gelling's death Feb 1994 at Barrow in Furness Cumbria, birthdate stated as 6 Jan 1919. We need his or your father's birth cert for their parent's names, and then the marriage cert of those folks to obtain father's names one generation further back. Without those, we're stuck. Then we can look at 1901 and go back from there.
Re the Kewleys, in 1901 they are at Kilkenny Farm in Braddan (ref RG13/5301 folio 22 page 9 #41):
John J Kewley, Head 48 Farmer b Lezayre
Mary A Kewley, Wife 45 b Douglas
William J Kewley, Son Single 24, b Peel
George H Kewley, Son S 22, b German
Frederick G Kewley Son S 20 b German
Violet M Kewley, 1Dau S 15 b Peel
Alfred E Kewley, Son 13, b German
Thomas W Kewley, Son 9 b Lezayre
Stanley F Kewley Son 7 b Lezayre
In 1891 they are at Glen Moor Corn Mill, German (RG12/4682 folio 87 page 3 #20):
John J Kewley, Head 40 Corn Miller, b Lezayre
Mary A Kewley, Wife 38, b Douglas
William J Kewley, Son 15 Miller (apprentice) b Peel
George H Kewley, Son 13, b German (Invalid)
Frederick J Kewley, Son 10 Scholar b German
Maude E Kewley, Dau 8 Scholar b German
Oscar J Kewley, Son 6 Scholar b German (now we know where the name "Oscar" came from)
Violet M Kewley, Daur 4 b Peel
Alfred E Kewley, Son 3 b German
Georgina H Kewley Dau 10 mos, b German
Skipping 1881 since you have it already, we find in the 1871 census at Castletown Road Kervaigue (? can't figure out that last word) in Braddan: John J Kewley 20 Miller's assistant b Lezayre living at home of William Collister, a Miller.
For 1861, this seem the most likely: (RG9/4416 folio 102 pg 1 #221) at 2 Calloden Place, Onchan:
William Kewley, Head 41 Mason b Douglas
Margaret Kewley, Wife 36 b Douglas
William Kewley, Son 16 Mason b Douglas
Agnes Jane Kewley Daur 14 Scholar b Douglas
Elizabeth A Kewley Daur 12 Scholar b Douglas
John James Kewley Son 10 Scholar b Douglas
Sophia Bridson, Visitor, Unm 27 Dressmaker b Douglas
I don't have 1851 and 1841 census's. Maybe somebody else can help with those.
I hope this helps
